Struggle for Independent Physiotherapy Council in India intensifies

It seems that the world order is changing with the struggles in Middle East, Egypt and Libya. The scene in India is changing as well, with Anna Hazare leading millions of young Indians who are rooting for stronger anti corruption law (Jan Lokpal Bill) in a bid to uproot graft from India.

In the same period, Prof. Umasankar Mohanty has taken up the charge of the Indian Association of Physiotherapists and has launched a massive post card campaign in order to solicit and build up pressure on the Indian Government to set up an independent physiotherapy council.

As quoted by Prof. Mohanty, “The newly elected Central Executive Committee (CEC) of IAP  has taken the pledge to work in full measure and very substantially. We are committed to work our echelon best to achieve our legitimate needs and aspirations for our physiotherapy profession.

At present the matter of fierce urgency is the Central Physiotherapy Council.  The Physiotherapists today are crippled by manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination compared to other healthcare professionals.

The CEC of IAP has already started meeting and interacting with people with political influences. They all insist that we all must create a mass movement and mass campaign in order to prioritize our needs to the representatives of our nation. Herewith, I invite all the physiotherapists/ physiotherapy students to start the mass campaign by postcard stating the following message to the mentioned leaders of our nation.”

Respected Sir/Madam,

I am a physiotherapist by profession or I am a Physiotherapy Student. I solicit your help to facilitate the formation of “ Independent Council for Physiotherapists”.

UPDATE:

Haryana Physiotherapist Association, which is an independent body not affiliated to IAP, has been agitating for the past few months for the rights of physiotherapists in Haryana. They launched a campaign which will submit a memorandum with signatures of more than 5000 physiotherapists in Haryana. HPA President, Jagat Singh, has declared that the memorandum would be submitted with 5000 signatures to both the ruling and oppostion party members in Haryana.

The principal demands of HPA include -

1. Separate physiotherapy council for regulation of physiotherapy education standards and professional physiotherapy norms.

2. Absorption of all unemployed PTs as Physiotherapy Medical Officer (Gazzetted) through PSC, with pay scales equivalent to MBBS, BDS etc.

3. Opening of Government Physiotherapy College.

Copy of memorandum to be submitted is presented here -
